“A wry Texas troubadour with a knack for crooked grace and a clever turn of phrase” —New York Times

Singer-songwriter and Texas native, Hayes Carll, known for his roots-oriented style of songwriting, plainspoken poetry and sarcastic humor recently swept the 2016–17 Austin Music Awards for Austin Musician of The Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Folk Performer.

After releasing his debut album, Flowers & Liquor, Carll was voted the “Best New Act of 2002” by the Houston Press. Since then he’s been compared to other Texas songwriters, including Townes Van Zandt, who he said “ruined me and saved me at the same time,” and Jerry Jeff Walker. His single, the honky-tonk lament of a newly minted Jesus freak’s jealous husband, “She Left Me for Jesus” was one of the “Top Singles of 2008” for The Village Voice and the Americana Music Association Song of the Year 2008. His newly released album Lovers and Leavers features “The Love That We Need,” written with Jack Ingram and Allison Moorer takes on a more somber, reflective tone.

For the new album he enlisted Joe Henry, the acclaimed singer-songwriter and artist-friendly producer whose recent credits include Bonnie Raitt, Beck, John Doe and Emmylou Harris. We recorded this record live in five days, using just an acoustic guitar, a mix of bass, percussion, pianos and organs, and a touch of pedal steel said Carll, “I didn’t have one song that I knew would be a sing along or would make people dance. I felt vulnerable in a way that I hadn’t in a long time. But I got what I wanted – a record with space, nuance, and room to breathe. It felt right for my art. It felt right for my life.”
